Estimating Disc Space Required

To estimate your disc space requirements you can use some industry averages as well as averages based upon our clients.

The average web code and text of a page was approximately 25k, which means that you could host four hundred text only web pages with only 1MB of space.

The space requirements can begin to increase when you add basic web graphics. A simple web icon will be about 3 kilobytes and a basic web graphic will be around 15k. A simple flash file will be around 30k.

Most simple web pages include a few graphics and average around 130k. Most of the pages hosted here are between 150k and 260k, with pages that include photo galleries going up to around 500k.

Depending on the complexity of your website, you could expect to host between 2 to 7 web pages for each MB of disc space.

*This does not include other files such as pdf documents or video that can often be several MB's each.

Estimating Bandwidth Required

The formula for estimating bandwidth is simple; the number of visitors to each page multiplied by the size of the page and its graphics.

An example would be 10 visitors a day each accessing 3 pages of 150k each would require 4.5MB of bandwidth per day or 140MB per month.

Another way of looking at that for each Gigabyte (1000 MB) you can have someone view one web page between 2 and 6 thousand times per month.

However, keep in mind that most search engines will access every page on your website every day and this will erode your available bandwidth.
